Riverside Brookfield Shootout Friday Standouts

The Riverside Brookfield Shootout is one of the most anticipated high school live events in Illinois. After a year off, the event was back and packed with talent. College coaches off all levels filled the gym all three days. 

Here are some of the players who stood out from the first day of the tournament.

Prince Adams (2023 Evanston Twp. HS): Adams is a great shot blocker. He uses his size, motor, and quick feet to lock down the paint. He has excellent close out speed and is very mobile. On offense, Adams can knock down mid-range shots and is great at crashing the boards for putbacks.

Xavier Amos (2022 Whitney Young): Amos is a dominant glass cleaner. The 6'8 wing hounded the glass for putbacks finishing everything around the rim. Amos has great size for his position and quick feet allowing him to guard 1-5. Amos also has great shot blocking instincts high pointing the ball, he has active hands as well making it incredibly hard to score on him.

Dylan Arnett (2022 DePaul Prep): Arnett is a dominant big man. The 6'9 forward has great footwork & body control carving out space in the post. Arnett’s back to the basket game is sensational, When he catches on the block, he has an array of moves to choose from. He can also finish above the rim with forceful dunks. Arnett forces double teams because of his gravity as a post scorer.

Richard Barron (2023 St. Ignatius HS): Barron is a big guard who excels at getting to his spots. Barron has a unique mix of quickness and strength and is a mismatch for most defenders. When Barron attacks the rim, defenders bounce off of him. His finishing ability paired with him being a knock down shooter from both the midrange & outside make him a dangerous weapon on the offensive end.

Nathan Boldt (2022 Barrington HS): Even at 6’9” with his great length, Boldt showed off plenty of skill. He moves very well for his size and can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket with a good handle plus made some nice passes. The power forward also showed a nice shooting stroke knocking down some threes spotting up. Boldt is an intriguing 2022 big man with great upside. 

Rashawn Bost (2022 Evanston Twp. HS): The quick point guard can really put up some points in a hurry. With his quickness and shifty moves, Bost was often getting into the paint and is a crafty finisher over defenders with a nice floater. The rising senior also can shoot it at a high percentage spotting up from the perimeter.  

AJ Casey (2022 Whitney Young): The big wing dominated as a slasher and scorer. Casey has great size for his position standing at 6’8" and a sweet shooting stroke. He has a great basketball body and is able to guard 1-5 using his strong frame. The long wing is adept at getting to the rim and drawing fouls. Casey can also grab boards and has a knack for getting putback buckets.

Cam Christie (2023 Rolling Meadows HS): In his first game of the shootout, Christie was constantly showing off his smooth jumper. The lengthy 6’6” guard was moving extremely well without the ball to get himself good looks in the mid-range and beyond the arc. With his size and length, he can get his shot off with ease and knock them down. Easy to see with his size and skill level, why the younger Christie has Big 10 offers. 

Bobby Durkin (2022 Glenbard West HS): Durkin lit up the scoreboard with his shooting ability. The wing is a knockdown spot up shooter that also hit some shots off the dribble. He has great form on his shot and was barely missing Friday. Durkin has some size at 6’6” and a solid frame. 

Isaiah Giles (2023 Westinghouse Prep): Giles is a playmaking point guard that is always looking to distribute the ball but can also score it himself. He is strong with the ball in his hands plus has good quickness to get to his spots on the floor. Giles has a nice passing ability and sees the floor well on the move. As well, the rising junior can really knock down jumpers from the perimeter. 

Joe Gilhooley (2022 Riverside Brookfield HS): Gilhooley is a jack of all trades on the wing. Standing at 6’4 Gilhooley uses his length to get into passing lanes and interrupt the offense. He has the ability to knock down shots and beat defenders off the dribble. Gilhooley is also a great cutter moving into space and working off-ball. On the defensive glass, his long arms help him secure boards and he always looks to push in transition.

Isaiah Green (2024 Hillcrest HS): Isaiah Green is a guard with a quick first step and great vision. Green has great passing instincts and finds open teammates when he attacks the basket. He has a nice pull up jumper and punishes defenders for going under screens. Green is also deadly in the midrange game with a quality floater that he can attack big men with.

Daniel Hong (2022 Barrington HS): The high IQ guard showed a nice scoring ability and got it done in a variety of ways. He has good quickness and moves well with the ball to get to the basket often and finish. Hong also showed a nice ability to hit some shots off the dribble in the mid-range and spot up for threes with a nice compact jumper.  

Braden Huff (2022 Glenbard West HS): Game after game, Huff continues to show he’s one of the most skilled big men in the entire Midwest. Even at 6’10” he was handling the ball out on the perimeter handling pressure from opposing guards. He plays well all over the floor, whether it be on the perimeter or the offense running through him at the high or low post with his great passing ability. Huff also showed great range on his jumper hitting threes from well beyond his jumper. He picked up an offer from Illinois following the tournament. 

Morez Johnson (2024 St. Rita HS): Johnson is a springy forward whose athleticism really stands out. The 6'8 forward runs the floor well and is excellent in transition. Johnson has great length and uses it on both ends blocking shots and scoring around the rim. He has a great second jump and uses it on the boards to grab rebounds and get putbacks.

Tavari Johnson (2022 Lyons Township HS): Johnson is a versatile scorer. He has an explosive first step and a tight handle. The 6’0 guard can break down defenders and has an uncanny ability to get himself open. He attacked the paint and scored at the rim and also was able to stop on a dime and pull up from mid range knocking down shots. 

Elijah Jointer (2022 Mount Caramel): Jointer excelled around the rim. The 6'5 forward controlled the paint and outrebounded everyone. He was able to corral missed shots for easy putbacks and forced the defense to foul him numerous times. Jointer is great at blocking and changing offensive players' shots at the rim.

Nick Martinelli (2022 Glenbrook South HS): More and more, college coaches are starting to notice the high-level scoring ability of the rising senior. Since the shootout, he has earned himself offers from Belmont, Milwaukee, and Toledo. With his aggressiveness and good moves off the dribble, Martinelli always gets to the basket often and finishes there but also got it done hitting shots off the dribble and even posting up. At 6’7” with his skills, the wing is a very tough matchup. 

Joevonn McCottry (2022 Riverside Brookfield HS): McCottry is a knockdown shooter. The 6'2 guard can score off the bounce or the catch from both mid-range & three. He is also an excellent cutter using his length to finish at the rim. On defense, he is a sneaky good defender in the post even though he has a slight frame his lanky arms more than make up for it blocking and contesting shots from bigger players.

Jackson Munro (2022 New Trier HS): Munro is a spectacular passer out of the post. He excels in the high post hitting cutters with his back to the basket. He also flashed some athleticism and showed the ability to throw down some dunks. The 6'8 forward battles on the floor every possession using his strength to fight for position on both offense and defense. Munro is also an excellent rebounder and box out guy. 

Michael Osei-Bonsu (2022 Bolingbrook HS): Bonsu is an explosive big man. He uses his low center of gravity to carve out space for himself in the post. The 6'5 forward is magnetic when it comes to drawing fouls. He attacks and initiates contact from defenders and finishes at the rim. On the glass he battles for every board like his life depends on it. 

Jake Quast (2022 Hinsdale Central HS): Quast really impressed with his ability to score at a high percentage. He knocked down five threes in a single game, hitting them off the dribble and catch with a quick release. The active wing guard also got it done going to the basket on drives and cuts and made some nice passes. 

AJ Redd (2022 St. Ignatius HS): Redd is a long athletic point guard. He is listed at 6'4 and controls the tempo of the game well. He has a quick first step and is a crafty finisher at the rim. Redd’s length helps him as a passer he is able to see over the defense and can create for his team. On defense, he uses his length to guard guards and forwards. He disrupts the offense gets his hands into passing lanes, and contests shots.

Miles Rubin (2023 Simeon HS): A long and athletic 6’9” forward with great upside. Rubin moves very well for his size and is an effective rim protector with all his tools. Rubin has good hands and scores the ball well around the basket. 

Noah Shannon (2022 New Trier HS): The 6'4 guard is a knockdown shooter off the catch. Shannon has a sweet shooting stroke and is great at shooting off of the catch. He rebounds very well for his position because of his great strength and length. Shannon has a huge motor and is willing to take a charge at any time and flew all over the court diving on loose balls.

Orlando Thomas (2022 Rolling Meadows HS): Thomas was one of the more impressive two-way guards at the shootout. The 6’3” guard proved to be a lockdown perimeter defender that was constantly shutting down opposing guards and wings plus can pressure the ball. The rising senior plays with great energy on the defensive end and gets all over ballhandlers. He plays well with or without the ball and showed a nice ability to create his own shot from the mid-range and outside. 

Bryce Tillery (2023 Hillcrest HS): The speedy point guard showed very good ability with the ball in his hands. With his handle and quickness, he can get wherever he wants on the floor with the ball. He was often getting into the paint to distribute it out or finish plus also showed a nice ability to hit shots off the dribble in the mid-range. Tillery is also an aggressive defender that pressures the ball well. 

Ben VanderWal (2022 Timothy Christian HS): The rising senior was one of the more impressive players on Friday. He put up 21 points in his first game and then followed that up with 29 points in his second game. The 6’7” wing got it done both by way of the three as well as getting to the basket. In a single game, VanderWal drilled five threes spotting up with deep range and went hard to the basket, and finished strong there in traffic. Expect him to be a popular name amongst coaches this summer.  

Martell Webb (2022 Westinghouse Prep): At 6’6” with his wide frame and strong build, Webb is a force inside. He is nearly impossible to stop once he gets the ball inside as uses his strength and body to finish so well right through defenders. The power forward also showed some nice ability as well hitting some outside shots and good moves off the dribble to scoring attacking the basket. 

Jamil Wilson (2022 De La Salle HS IL): A lengthy 6’7” power forward that shows great upside. Wilson scored the ball well on the block posting up, showing off a couple of nice moves as well as a soft touch. He battles in the paint on both ends and with his length and athleticism showed a good ability to block shots and deter drivers.
